Installing a Free Standing Whirlpool Bathtub

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Whale Whirlpool BathtubFree standing whirlpool bathtubs are designed to be installed on a finished floor and are mostly used for bathroom remodeling purposes. Although they are installed in new construction applications, these tubs are designed to easily replace any existing bathtub or shower surround. They have become very popular in recent years because of the wide variety of styles and features they offer. These Jacuzzi like bathtubs can come in many styles including claw foot Jacuzzis, modern whirlpool baths and traditional style bathtubs. But the main selling point is the ease of installation they offer homeowners.
The first step to installing a free-standing whirlpool bathtub is to finish and level the floor your whirlpool bath will be placed on. If you are tearing out an old bathtub or shower enclosure you have the option to tile or finish the floor to match the remainder of your bathroom, although this may not be necessary depending on how much of the floor your new free standing tub covers.
The next step is to level the whirlpool bathtub. Each unit comes with adjustable feet making the unit easy to level even if the surface you are installing on isn’t 100% level. This is one of the most crucial steps to ensure that your bathtub will drain correctly.
The next step in the installation process would be to connect the water lines. These connections are similar to a washing machine. You will need to cut the water lines and add a male thread to each of them. Using plumbing tape on all the water connections will ensure that there are no leaks. For best results you want to recess the water lines into the wall behind the whirlpool bathtub.
Now it is time to connect the electricity to the unit. Typically this is where you will need a licensed electrician since the majority of whirlpool bathtubs need to be hardwired to a dedicated GFI breaker. After you have connected the electricity it is a good idea to turn the unit on to make sure the control panel is receiving power.
After your unit is leveled and the water and electricity has been connected it is time to connect the drain to the whirlpool bath. This is one of the reasons many homeowners choose to go with the freestanding units. Since the unit is built on a steel frame and elevated off the ground PVC pipe can be run from your existing drain (as long as it sits under the base of the bathtub) to the drain on the bathtub eliminating the need to reposition your drain which can be a hassle. We recommend using a rubber connection for this with water clamps so you can easily slide the unit out if need be.
Now that your Jacuzzi bathtub is installed it is time to check to make sure there aren’t any leaks run the water for 3-5 minutes with the drain open to ensure there aren’t any. It is also a good idea to switch the function valve to test all the fixtures your whirlpool bathtubs may have such as a hand held shower or over head shower.
Depending on the circumstances some homeowners will seal the unit to the wall. This is mostly done with free standing corner bathtubs but any unit can potentially seal to the wall. For sealing the unit we recommend using clear silicone as apposed to bathroom caulk. The reason being clear silicone is a better sealant and can be easily removed and reapplied without permanently sticking to the acrylic surface of your bathtub.
Now that your Jacuzzi bathtub is finally installed it is time to test out all the features it may have. Many models have built in precautions to ensure the jets can’t run in a dry bathtub so you will have to fill the whirlpool to full capacity before all the features can be tested.

Modern Whirlpool Bathtubs

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Vibracoustic BathtubThe whirlpool bathtub has drastically changed over the last ten years. Whirlpool baths are not just jetted bathtubs any more. They have extensive features such as chromo therapy lighting and additional air jets, which are more subtle then the traditional water massage jets. They also come in a variety of shapes in styles. They can be recessed or free standing offering home owners the opportunity to easily replace their existing bathtub with a home spa.

There are many drastic new designs and styles, for example the Jacuzzi Morphosis line of bathtubs offers an ultra modern seamless curved design, which is made to cradle the bather in the most comfortable position. These modern bathtubs cost in upwards of $20,000 which isn’t exactly in the price range of the average home owner. However the Royal 909 Whirlpool bathtub has been heavily influenced by these modern designs, taking the Morphosis styling to a whole other level by adding many modern features never seen in jetted bathtubs. It features a built in radio and sound system, inline heater, a mixture of air and water massage jets, multi function over head and hand held shower wands and a built in telephone. The best feature of this royal tub is it costs less than a quarter of the Jacuzzi Morphosis even with all these additional features.

Kohler has taken the whirlpool bathtub to a whole other level with their new Vibracoustic bathtubs which has a sound system built into the bathtub. The innovative feature allows the bather to listen to the music above and below the water. The bathers head to rest halfway in the water allowing their ears to be underwater and still listen to their favorite music allowing the sounds to pass through the water. This wonderful bathtub also features chromo therapy lighting for added therapeutic benefits. This is quite possible the most innovative whirlpool bathtub on the market and offers the user a one of a kind bathing experience.

Walk-in bathtubs have are another innovation offered by whirlpool manufacturers. These bathtubs appeal mostly to older bathers and come in a variety of sizes. They allow bathers to take a deep soaking bath without having to step over a bathtub ledge. They have a water sealing door that locks allowing the user to walk in and fill the tub with out having to worry about slipping or falling. Many models also come equipped with large water connections which allow the water to full much quicker than a standard bathtub. Drainage pumps can also be installed allowing the tub to drain quicker than gravity will allow this keeps the user from getting cold while they are wait to get out of the bathtub. Walk-in bathtubs come with a variety of jet combinations offering air jet, water jet or combination units as well as standard soaking tubs.
